Project Description: East Moreland Urban Infill Residence
Located in the vibrant East Moreland neighborhood of Portland, Oregon, this architectural project exemplifies the art of urban infill. The site, a classic infill lot divided by the original property owner, presents a unique challenge with its steep 20-foot grade change, translating to a 25% slope. The design creatively harnesses this natural topography, resulting in a split-level floor plan that not only respects the land but also enhances the living experience.
Material Palette and Aesthetic:
In response to the natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest, the material palette is rooted in native materials. The building is conceived as a wooden mass that has been carefully carved to create functional and aesthetic spaces. The exterior features charred Shou Sugi Ban cedar siding, giving the home a striking and durable finish. Areas where the mass has been "carved away" reveal warm, natural stained cedar, adding a tactile contrast that highlights the design's craftsmanship.
