Project Description: Secluded Workspace in the Southwest Hills of Portland
Nestled in the tranquil Southwest Hills of Portland, Oregon, this architectural project was conceived as a secluded workspace for The Good software company. Following the closure of its physical offices in the wake of the pandemic, the company sought a unique, remote working environment that would serve both as a professional recording studio and a personal retreat for its owner. Perched near Council Crest Park, this site offers a sense of solitude, surrounded by old-growth Douglas fir trees and overlooking the valley and coastal range to the west.
Design and Integration with the Landscape:
The workspace is designed to blend seamlessly into the natural landscape, stepping down the hillside and embedding itself within the terrain. The site’s unique location inspired a design that feels as if it is part of the hillside itself. Above the workspace, a turfed yard with a sustainable green roof conceals the structure, making it nearly invisible from above. Corten steel steps, accompanied by fern-filled planter boxes, lead down to the hidden entrance, reinforcing the feeling of descending into a secret retreat.
